School Closing, Instructional Packets, & Graduation

Dear Parents,

Now that Governor Henry McMaster has ordered all South Carolina K-12 schools to be closed for the rest of the 2019-2020 academic year, the uncertainty of the length of closure is over. What we had hoped would be a brief pause in the academic year has instead turned into a complete shift in the way we all have to think about our children’s care and education during this health emergency. I speak for all here at Florence School District Five when I say that we are grateful for your kindness, patience, and encouragement, as we have worked to keep students engaged in their learning.

We will be continuing with instructional packets for the rest of the academic year. We are asking that instructional packet 2 be returned on April 29, 30, and May 1. Bins will be located in front of the school for you to drop off the packets. It is very important that the packets be returned to the school so that teachers can review the work done by each student. Instructional packet 3 will be mailed on April 30. If you do not receive a packet, please contact your child’s school so that a packet can be delivered to you. Packet 3 will be the last instructional packet sent out to students.

The current set of circumstances does not allow us to have the traditional ceremonies for our seniors at the end of the year. We have prepared a plan to allow each of our seniors to graduate in the gym with their family present. (Information will be sent to our seniors later this week.) In addition, the City of Johnsonville, the Chamber of Commerce and the Florence Five School Board will be sponsoring banners throughout the City of Johnsonville honoring each graduating senior. The banners will feature each senior’s individual picture and their name. In addition, the School Board will be providing an 8 x 10 photograph of each senior receiving their diploma.

Meals will continue to be offered to all students at our community sites. All students can receive their meals at Johnsonville Elementary or at any of our designated pick-up locations located throughout the community. We are currently serving approximately 2,500 meals a week.

Thank you for your understanding as we strive to continue to put our students and staff first in these difficult times. We will continue to keep you updated as new information is received. Please continue to stay safe!

Sincerely,

Randy Smiley, Superintendent
